Club History
Mansfield Hockey Club was effectively founded in 1950 though at that time it was known as St Peter's Hockey Club. Many of the players of the time, including John Ford, David Wallace, Colin Seymour and Peter Jelley were members of the congregation at St Mark's. Peter Jelley was even the organist and choirmaster. They left St Peter's to form the Mansfield Club that exists today.
Early matches were played at Mansfield Racecourse, and "senior" players will remember days at "The Quarry" with no showers, a tea urn that needed to be switched on at half time, a pitch that needed marking out every Saturday and sandwich and cake duty.
The switch to artificial pitches meant years at the Lawns in Sutton in Ashfield and the days in Kirkby and Mansfield Woodhouse. Now games are played at Goosedale Sports Club.
The Club has grown steadily from one side to the present five Saturday sides. The Club now runs several junior teams and in 2008, the Under 18 team reached the National Final of the Plate Competition.
Our President, Mr Glyn Lloyd, joined the Club in the 1955-56 season and has now started his 53rd season as a player.
